Abstract, Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a diagnostic technique which can produce a clear and detail image from tissues or organs of human body by using a contrast agent. Nowadays, Gd-DTPA complex have been used as a safety contrast agent with low side effect. But, until now the needs of contrast agent in Indonesia is only can be satisfied with expensive imported product. The objective of this research is to synthesize modified Gd-DTPA complex and to purify it by using Dowex 50WX8 as the cation exchanger chromatography. The research method includes the process of synthesizing Gd-DTPA complex from gadolinium oxide and DTPA with the comparison ratio of 1:1.1. The crystallization process is followed by the purification through cation exchange chromatography using Dowex 50WX8 resins. Free gadolinium (III) is determined by utilizing visible spectrophotometer, while the determination of free DTPA was utilizing complexometric titration. The identification of functional groups of synthesized Gd-DTPA was using infrared spectrophotometer. The result shown that Gd-DTPA complex recovery with reflux time of 1, 2, and 3 hours were 60,9%, 69,1% dan 61,3% respectively. The functional group of synthesized Gd-DTPA product is identified to be identical with the commercial Gd-DTPA. The concentration of free Gadolinium(III) in synthesized product of  Gd-DTPA complex with reflux time of 1, 2, and 3 hours were 6,09, 6,24 and 6,53 ppm respectively. Whereas, the concentration of free DTPA in all of the three synthesized product of Gd-DTPA complex were 0 ppm. The Gd-DTPA complex can be purified from free gadolinium(III) with cation exchanger chromatography using  Dowex 50WX8 resins.
